UPDATE: The Photoshop CS3 beta is now available directly from the Adobe Labs, nullifying our earlier coverage of a pulled link (below).

In addition, an Adobe spokesperson tells us that a discrepancy between 2-day and 30-day trial terms has been resolved in a newly posted disk image -- the software now correctly informs the user that s/he is installing a 2-day trial if a Photoshop CS2 serial number is absent.

The serial number rejection problems noted below, however, are still present.

Remember that if you think you are having a serial number rejection issue, make sure that you are using the serial number generated from your Photoshop CS2 number by this page: https://www.adobe.com/go/photoshopcs3beta_serialnumber. You cannot simply enter your CS2 serial number in the CS3 startup screen.

As expected, Adobe has released a public beta of Photoshop CS3, the next iteration of the company's venerable image editing software.

Along with being the first Universal Binary release of Photoshop for Mac OS X (bringing dramatically enhanced speed to Intel-based Mac), Adobe's release notes state the following regarding the new beta:

'Adobe Photoshop CS3 delivers new tools and enhancements that enable you to work more productively, edit with unrivaled power, and composite with breakthrough ease and control. Please note that a beta is, by definition, an unfinished product that may or may not include all the features and functionality that will appear in the final release. And while some may find the quality appropriate for use in a production environment, the beta is not final-release quality and should not be used for critical work. Adobe does not offer technical support for the Photoshop CS3 beta.'

Unfortunately, after a few hours of availability, the download link for Photoshop CS3 is nowhere to be found, non-extant on the Adobe Labs page nor the Adobe downloads page. However, the beta is still available for download from https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/entitlement/index.cfm?e=labs_photoshop.

To clarify -- this beta is available to all users as a 2-day trial, but users with valid Photoshop CS2 serial numbers can remove this time limit. In an apparent error, the application displays a message indicating that it will run in a 30-day trial mode when first launched.

UPDATE: Despite the software download clearly indicating a 30-day trial, an Adobe representative e-mailed us stating:

'I work for the PR agency for Adobe, just wanted to send you a quick correct on your Photoshop CS3 article about downloads. It notes that there is a 30 day period for users without a serial number, and the actual grace period is 2 days.'

Quitting then re-launching the program will result in a display of the correct, 2-day trial message.

Serial numbers not working The Photoshop CS3 beta serial number generation page is rejecting valid serial numbers for some users. As aforementioned, a CS2 serial number is required to remove the 30-day trial limitation on the CS3 beta.

MacFixIt reader Tom Luack writes:

'I am a registered Creative Suite CS2 Premium user and when I use my serial # to get an Adobe beta serial# for Photoshop CS3, it rejects my serial #.

'This, in spite of the fact, that the serial number is recognized in my Adobe account. Copying and pasting to avoid typos didn't work. Adding dashes didn't work.'

'No answer yet from Adobe. Maybe other people are having this problem.'

Q. Is the Photoshop CS3 beta feature set complete? A. By definition, a beta is not the final build of a product. Since the Photoshop CS3 software is far along in its development cycle, there will not be time to incorporate feature feedback from this public beta into the final release. However, engineering and testing work on Photoshop CS3 will be ongoing until the launch in spring 2007, and feature suggestions gathered during the public beta may still influence future releases of the software.

Q. Will there be updates to the Photoshop CS3 beta before the final product ships? A. We do not plan any additional beta releases for Photoshop CS3 before it is announced and ships.

Q: When will the Adobe Photoshop CS3 beta expire? A. The Photoshop CS3 beta will expire soon after the launch of Photoshop CS3 in spring 2007.
